How Do I Treat Hot Flashes?

It’s hard enough to survive hot flashes, let alone when it’s over 100 degrees.

Most people think that hot flashes only come from a lack of estrogen. Not true. They can be caused by an imbalance between your estrogen and progesterone where you are actually deficient in progesterone. They can also come from a low functioning thyroid. Or they can come from a deficiency of your calming neurotransmitters (which is why hot flashes are typically worse during times of stress). And these are just some of the more common imbalances. As a naturopathic doctor, I’ll always recommend having someone check these out and help you get back into balance. That said, here are a few easy things you can try on your own that may address any of those underlying issues.

  1. Refreshing Showers – at the end of a hot shower, step out of the water. Turn it as cold as you can possibly tolerate it, and then step back in for 20-30 seconds. It will take your breath away temporarily, but helps to stimulate your body’s natural ability to regulate itself.
  2. Vitex agnus-castus – this is a great herb that can gently balance your hormones. It has a way of bringing high levels down and low levels up. Look for it in a tincture and try 30 drops, 3 times a day. You can squirt it right in your mouth, or mix it in a little water if you’re struggling with the taste.
  3. Try making tea – grab some sage and red clover flowers and mix them together. Boil water and pour it over the herbs (about 2 teaspoons of herbs per cup of tea). Let it steep for about 15 minutes, strain and drink. You can also use the herbs to make sun tea. And no matter how you make it, it will be just as effective over ice.
